The attainment of the ‘Coming Great Church,’ proclaiming one Gospel to the whole world … implies the surrender of distinctive evangelical truth.  The one Gospel to be preached certainly will not be the Gospel of salvation through the exclusive merits of Christ. Mysticism is a substitute for true spirituality, true Christianity. True Christianity is rooted in Truth, the Gospel of Salvation. Mysticism seeks God another way, not through the Cross of Christ. The irony about the rise of mystical practices in today’s postmodern church is that in people’s endeavors to attain a heightened spirituality they rely upon methods of the flesh that induce mental and emotional “highs.”

The 2015 Parliament of the World’s Religions was held October 15-19 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They estimated over fourteen thousand people attended this New Age (now called “interfaith”) convention. The Parliament of the World’s Religions has an agenda and they are now very open about it. It is now an outright attack on the Christian church and the Word of God. They are not afraid to say that “an orthodox Bible believing Christian does not fit in our world nor will they be tolerated.”

A recent article in “World” Magazine titled “Still-silent shepherds” summarized the top reasons evangelical pastors give for not preaching against abortion. Among them is that “preaching on the issue might politically stigmatize the pastor or politicize the pulpit, scaring seekers off.”

Mysticism is an attempt to gain ultimate knowledge of God by a direct experience that bypasses the mind. The strong influence of Catholic mysticism has helped immensely to transform the New Age Movement from being merely a counter-culture sub-culture to becoming a new source of spiritual vision for the world. Catholic mysticism has very effectively and subtly invaded many facets of life without being recognized or critically examined. This has been actively promoted through self-help medical, educational and psychological programs employing methods such as meditation, philosophical programming, and self-hypnotic contemplation.

The Emerging Church is not easy to define because it is not a “new” Church being established by new spiritual leaders in opposition to existing established churches. Rather, it is existing spiritual leaders, in existing Christian churches, calling for a need to establish a “new” or more “modern approach” for the modern world that we live in. They say that modern man has outgrown the old established ideas of Christianity and there is a need to redefine Christianity in order to reach the 21st century, or post-modern man, and that the old ways and old church are no longer effective. We need a new kind of Christianity if we are going to make a difference in people’s lives and the world around us.
