When we examine the heart of this mystical revolution, we find there’s a source of authority, so to speak. There’s some thing, some entities running this. It’s not the authors themselves but the force behind them that is in charge. And the power or force behind all these authors despises the Gospel and hates Christianity.

Mysticism is a substitute for true spirituality, true Christianity. True Christianity is rooted in Truth, the Gospel of Salvation. Mysticism seeks God another way, not through the Cross of Christ. The irony about the rise of mystical practices in today’s postmodern church is that in people’s endeavors to attain a heightened spirituality they rely upon methods of the flesh that induce mental and emotional “highs.”

In earlier articles we examined some of the associations between Eastern religion and Satanism/witchcraft. Now we bring our concerns closer to home by examining the beliefs of some popular American gurus. Among Eastern gurus as a whole, occult practices are widely accepted.

The 2015 Parliament of the World’s Religions was held October 15-19 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They estimated over fourteen thousand people attended this New Age (now called “interfaith”) convention. The Parliament of the World’s Religions has an agenda and they are now very open about it. It is now an outright attack on the Christian church and the Word of God. They are not afraid to say that “an orthodox Bible believing Christian does not fit in our world nor will they be tolerated.”

Since this successful onslaught by the humanists, the public schools have been viewed as a crucial vehicle for any “reform” movement. Recognizing this truth, the New Age Movement wasted no time in assailing public school children. Just as secular humanism assaulted every aspect of our society, New Age thought is infiltrating each facet as well. One can observe it in the media, in literature, in churches, and even in politics. But the most conspicuous influence, without a doubt, is the invasion of our educational system.

Visualization attempts to program the mind to discover inner power and guidance. It is often used as a means to, or in conjuction with, altered states of consciousness and is frequently used to develop psychic abililties or make contact with spirits.

Although visualization can be adapted to almost any philosophy, in its popular usage it is loosely tied to a monistic or pantheistic world view that sees humans as divine and creators of their own reality. The practice itself en-hances and perhaps even sets up the development of the monistic (“all is one”) states of consciousness foundational to the New Age movement.

Mysticism is an attempt to gain ultimate knowledge of God by a direct experience that bypasses the mind. The strong influence of Catholic mysticism has helped immensely to transform the New Age Movement from being merely a counter-culture sub-culture to becoming a new source of spiritual vision for the world. Catholic mysticism has very effectively and subtly invaded many facets of life without being recognized or critically examined. This has been actively promoted through self-help medical, educational and psychological programs employing methods such as meditation, philosophical programming, and self-hypnotic contemplation.

In this article I will show that Foster’s “journey inward” is unbiblical and dangerous. I will show that most of the spiritual disciplines that he calls “means of grace” are no means of grace at all—but a means of putting oneself under spiritual deception. Foster describes the idea of the disciplines that are the topic of his book: “The classical Disciplines of the spiritual life call us to move beyond surface living into the depths. They invite us to explore the inner caverns of the spiritual realm.” So Foster has conceptually repudiated sola scriptura on page one to replace it with a journey inward to explore the realm of spirits.

Ray Yungen describes how the New Age Movement intends to conquer Christianity. He quotes Alice Bailey, a New Age leader, who realized that Christianity was becoming weak and vulnerable. She declared that a time would come when New Age philosophy would be illuminated through Christianity. The tactic is clearly defined by Yungen when he writes: “In other words, instead of opposing Christianity, the occult [New Age] would capture and blend itself with Christianity and then use it as its primary vehiclefor spreading and instilling New Age consciousness”
