Reincarnation is the belief that after a person dies, he or she returns to earth in another form or for another life. This popular belief is accepted in many Eastern religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Shintoism.

Scripture makes it clear that we have one life on earth before we receive an eternal judgment and verdict, based on whether we accepted Jesus as our Savior. We don’t get several lives here on earth to make the right decision; we have only the one.

Today millions of intelligent people believe in the idea of reincarnation.This is the idea that after death the soul or life-force will eventually find its way into another body. There are many different and contradictory theories concerning how reincarnation works. One thing is sure however. If reincarnation is true, then death is not final. It is only the gateway to a new existence. Death, then, is therefore also relatively safe. There is no need to fear hell-fire or eternal judgment. This is comforting.

According to recent surveys, approximately twenty-three percent of the population of the United States believes in the possibility of reincarnation. Its advocates proudly include themselves in an elitist group of “true believers” such as Plato, Socrates, Shakespeare, Arthur Conan Doyle, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Ford, and even “allegedly” Jesus Christ Himself. Much of reincarnation’s popularity in today’s otherwise materialistic and scientifically oriented society can be credited to Hollywood’s almost omnipresent influence on public views.

Many people who accept reincarnation in the West today claim that it can be scientifically proven. They usually ground their belief on past-life recall experiences, which represent the ability of certain persons to recall facts of alleged previous lives. This phenomenon occurs under two distinct forms. One is observed under hypnosis, while regressing certain persons beyond the date of birth. The other is produced by some children who spontaneously remember a previous life identity, amazing their neighbors with specific details that match those of the life of a deceased person. Could these experiences really be proofs for reincarnation?
